James-Ellis Insert Move

December 22nd, 2007

This is a beauty used to bring a card back to the top of the deck in one of the most convincing way; watch it in the next video (at 00:34):

Still wondering how it is done?

  1. The magician is holding a break at the very last card of the pack of cards from which the selected card is taken from its top and then placed on top of the other packet (at 00:30).
  2. While pushing the selected card to let it stick out of the deck (00:36 to 00:38) the bottom card held by the magician’s break is dropped on top of the selected card.
  3. The magician then shows the card that is sticking out of the deck (Ace of spades) while hidding the card that was dropped on top of it. (00:39 to 00:41)
  4. The top card, that appears to be the card just shown is then inserted in the middle of the other pack of cards, this pack of card is then inserted in the middle of the other pack of card (with the ace of spaces on top).

The selected card was put back on top of the deck in front of everyone without a single fancy, suspicious move. Simply efficient!

The Dribble Pass

December 22nd, 2007

This is a though one but keep practicing if you’re into card magic! This is a total convincer if you can break it down and master it! Great tutorial from magic-bible.com:

The Riffle Pass

December 22nd, 2007

This based on the classic pass but requires more practice. It is best performed when the card inserted in the middle of the deck is left face up and creates a very convincing visual illusion when it is brought back on top of the deck.

It can also be combined with the turn-over pass or in a magic trick routine like the ambitious card routine.

The Turn-Over Pass

December 22nd, 2007

This is another variation of the classic pass in which you bring the bottom half of your deck of cards on top of the top packet to bring a selected card to the top. This move requires practice but is very convincing in a magic trick. YouTube Preview Image

The Classic Pass

December 22nd, 2007

The pass is a sleight of hand used in magic tricks to control a card that is apparently inserted in the deck back on to the top of the cards. The following video is quite descriptive, it will show you a few variations and different methods to get your pinky break.

Here it is explained slowly (you can also use the finger next to your pinky instead):

This is a video of what this card magic trick or sleight of hand should look like when you learned it well (it also has a very nice variation that is a magic trick in its own):

Push-off Double lift

December 21st, 2007

This is without a doubt the best variation of the double lift and is explained in details in this video. The double lift is a sleight of hand you must learn if you want to perform good card magic trick routines.

Pinky Break

December 21st, 2007

This is a must, do not even think about skipping this one if you intend to do any card magic or free magic at all! The first and simplest variation of the pinky break is done in 3 steps that can easily be covered by gesturing with the hand that holds the deck while creating the break:

  1. Hold your deck with the mecanics grip
  2. Push the top card slightlty using your thumb until you can fit your pinky between the top card (that is pushed) and the second card
  3. Put the fat part of your pinky between the top and second card and push back the card gently until it is aligned back with the rest of the deck.

In the following video, Brandon Nowasky describes using a break to give the illusion that a selected card is inserted and then lost in the middle of a deck.

LePaul bluff pass

December 21st, 2007

This simple and beautiful sleight of hand will convince anyone as long as you perform it relaxed and naturally.

LePaul Bluff Pass

  1. Ask a spectator to select and hold any card in the deck.
  2. Holding a pinky break between the top and second card: shuffle through the cards from top to bottom using your thumb and ask someone to say “Stop”.
  3. As if you were picking up the upper part of the deck exactly where the spectator requested you to stop: lower the hand holding the deck and pick the top card where you are holding your break.
As for the hand keeping the single card, hold it gently and be relaxed so it is barely hanging on. Relax your arm as a unit and fall in a natural position the same way you would be holding more than one card. The hand holding the deck should be kept about 1 feet lower than the hand holding the top card; this is to attract attention away from the single card without moving it at all and create suspicion.
  4. Request the person holding the card to put it on the top of the pack of cards you are holding.
  5. While putting back the top card of the deck let your fingers go down until aproximately the middle of the deck where you will take the upper cards and make them dribble back on the deck. This creates the illusion that put back all the cards you caused to dribble back on the other cards.

The Marlo Tilt & Tilt Color Change

December 21st, 2007

This goes hand-in-hand with the Push-off Double Lift double lift, it is one of the basic sleights of hand used to perform a handful of different routines. In the following video, you will see two sleighs of hand: The Marlo Tilt and the simple Tilt Color Change.

YouTube Preview Image

Marlo’s Tilt

  1. Get a pinky break right under the top card.
  2. Use one of the following convincers:
Convincer 1: Poke some cards in the middle of the deck to create the impression (this is a convincer) you are going to put the card somewhere near the middle.
Convincer 2 (harder): While holding your break, seperate the deck or card aproximately in the middle of the deck and convince your audience “This is about the middle of the deck”.
  3. When inserting the card it is recommended to bend it slightly to add to the illusion that it is inserted near the middle (not under the top card!). Depending on your angle you can easily insert it normally under your pinky break, under the top card.

Tilt Color Change

  1. Place your hand on top of the deck.
  2. With your fingers push the top card by about an inch.
  3. As you show the top card, pull the undercard with the heel until it is no longer under the top card.
  4. As you cover the deck bring back the undercard on top of the deck.

You have now switched the top card with the second card in the deck.
